Weather and climate
The city has a temperate climate with Mediterranean influence, and all the seasons clearly distinguished. It is characterized by hot and humid summers and cold rainy winters. Yearly precipitation is at average 870 mm.
March is generally rainy, but April and May are short and very pleasant, with clear skies and warm air. Everything is in blossom, beautiful gardens float in white and pink foam. June is half spring, half summer with changeable but generally clear weather. July and August are the driest months, rather hot, with average temperatures about 28°C. Although the precipitation is scarce, there is no real summer drought as occurs further west, in the continental parts of the country. Cool breezes from Bosporus soothe summer heat. There can be some cloudy or overcast days, except from two or three weeks of heat.
It is possible to bathe in the sea by the end of September. The beaches on the coast of the Black Sea, the Marmara, and the Princes' Islands are all less than one hour away from the center. Some of city beaches are extremely well organized, but the major part of the coastline is currently undergoing cleansing. On stormy days the Black Sea can be like ocean.
Autumn is the longest season. It is warm, gradually cooling and dampening to November. Mornings are cool and misty, though in the midday it is possible to experience a really summer weather. Morning haze can render the skies an enchanting bright mother-of-pearl colour.
Winter is cold and very rainy. Severe frosts are rare; the average temperature in January is about 5°C. In February short, but heavy snowfalls can occur. It snows in average for two-three weeks, the snow does not hold, but huge amount of it can fall at a time. The city is rather windy, prevalent are cool and rainy "poyraz" from the south, and the warm "lodos" from the south.
